Our News
|
 |
Welcome to our October Edition!
This is, of necessity, one of our shorter versions. As with every family a lot of both positive and negative things have been happening this year. Although everything is turning out well, there just has not been the same amount of time available for writing this combination quilt magazine/newsletter. Hopefully, that will all change in the New Year so please stay with us. I will continue to publish on a slightly irregular basis.
We have been enjoying a beautiful autumn filled with glorious colour. I hope you are all experiencing great weather too, wherever you happen to be. Before we know it, we'll all be preparing for Christmas although Thanksgiving will come first in the U.S.
Happy Quilting,
Maria

Our Links Are Changing |
Starting with this issue, we are changing to the newer style of non-underlined links. There are two ways to recognize them. They are in blue and when your cursor passes over them, the symbol will change from an arrow to a hand.
It is still important to remember that clicking on them will open new, additional windows. Bookmark the ones you would like to visit again, but then be sure to close each one before clicking on the next. Too many open windows can cause your computer to slow down and some older computer systems to crash. |
| |
| Our Email Links Are Changing Too |
The Problem: I receive 200 - 300 spam messages daily. It is such a nuisance having to check through them all because invariably, legitimate email ends up in my Spam/Junk Folder and Spam ends up in my Inbox. It is taking up too much of my time each day - time that can be better spent elsewhere. I have tried some of the codes designed to prevent spammers from collecting email addresses on the Web, but none work very long.
The Solution: One is to begin changing the email addresses I have been using, so please take note of any you may have added to your address books. Two is to ask you to take an extra step with email links. Once you have clicked on them a message window will still pop up for your convenience, but you will need to make a correction to the email address.
Example, if the correct email address were wonderwoman@mariamichaelsdesigns.com it would appear with spaces and at instead of @ – wonder woman at mariamichaelsdesigns.com . To make the email address usable, you will need to remove all spaces and change the at back to @.
These changes will also take place on my website when time permits. When I find a better, foolproof way to address this problem, I will use it. In the meantime, I will appreciate your help and understanding and I thank you. |

| Our Newly Available Patterns |
| A Simply Plaid Halloween |
|
|
Need a quick project for Halloween?
This cute wall hanging is quickly and simply made using the fusible appliqué method, but you can use your favourite appliqué method. I love the way the yellow faces and the moon seem to glow in a darkened room. You can, if you wish, make the pattern in traditional Halloween fabric colours instead of plaids. I think the plaids make the quilt quite distinctive, though.
I took the ghosts and pumpkins from various drawings of Michael's and combined them to make this fun wall hanging.

About Simply Plaid
Simply Plaid is a Canadian wholesale distributor of 100 percent woven cotton plaid fabrics. If your quilt shop does not carry them, ask them to. These plaids are a lovely, soft cotton. Their lines are perfectly perpendicular to the selvedge and crosswise grains. They wash and iron beautifully. They are so well woven that it is very difficult to distinguish the right side from the wrong side. I am thoroughly enjoying working with them and using them in patterns. Plaids are not only homey in appearance they add warmth and interest to quilts when used.
|
Quilter Chris Jenkins offers this tip for uneven plaids. She explains that the “wrong side” of the fabric is the same as the “right” side in reverse. This produces symmetry in a block with mirror-images. She discovered this while making a gored skirt.
