Book Reviews

The A- by Harriet

This book is both a perfect choice for the new quilter and a great reference book for the experienced quilter. It is full of beautiful colour photos of the many quilt patterns included and concentrates on traditional quilt making.

In it, quilters will find 80 complete, step by step sets of directions and full-sized patterns; lots of valuable information on: selecting and caring for fabrics; calculating yardage; designing borders; equipment and supplies; choosing quilting designs; piecing techniques; battings, backings, and bindings; basic settings; cutting techniques; drafting patterns; work spaces; and more.

It has been written by two well-known quilt teachers.

Pieces: A Year in Poems and Quilts - by Anna Grossnickle Hines

Anna's books are always a delightful feast for the eyes and Pieces is no exception. She is a skilled, talented quilter and poet. Her quilts are marvels of colour and beauty and her poetry adds a special sparkle. Pieces is a perfect book to settle in with for an evening of enjoyment and inspiration!

Included in the book is The Story Behind the Quilts. I am hard put to choose just one favourite so must list several that I love: Magic Show, Silhouettes, Shadows,
To Each His Own, and Takeout! but it is so difficult to have to leave out any of them!

If you missed seeing Anna's Featured Quilter spot in an earlier newsletter, you will find it here. Visit her website to see more of her books and quilts.

The Christmas Quilt - by Jennifer Chiaverini

Like all of Jennifer's other novels, The Christmas Quilt is a heartwarming story filled with Sylvia's memories of Christmases past.

Her memories start with the Great Depression and go on through World War II, and the joys and sorrows that are a part of every life. Through it all, the women of their family quilt, knit, bake, and carry on. A Christmas strudel tradition is an especially interesting one which makes the reader want to be right in the kitchen with them and taking a bite!

I thoroughly enjoyed The Christmas Quilt as I do all of Jennifer's books. This is perfect reading for the season!

Quilt Sites

Edie's Beads
Edie's is a very good place to find glass beads for embellishments. Visit her eBay store! I did recently and was very pleased with her prices and her speedy delivery.

Embroidery Designs by Carolyn
If you have an embroidery machine, you will not want to miss visiting Carolyn's site! Her designs are beautiful and she has a large number of collections for you to choose from. There are borders, florals, hears, angels, heirloom designs, winter, holiday designs, penguins, cups and saucers, entire scenes, a sewing machine with a quilt, and so very many more!

There are more designs than you first realize. Most links open up into a menu of links. You are sure to spend a lot of delighted moments as you go through them and see all of the lovely, attractive designs - and to think she has designed them all herself! All you lucky people with embroidery machines will have found a treasure trove.

Although the site is mainly aimed at garment sewers, quilters' imagination and creativity will flourish and soar just looking at these designs and thinking of all the ways they can be used. Coincidentally, one of the design sets is Decorative Flourishes which would be beautiful in a quilt border, or anywhere else on a quilt. So will the Border menu. I won't write more.

Carolyn was a watercolor painter for about 25 years, but due to health problems, had to stop painting. Her husband taught her how to use a computer so that she could digitize her artwork and provide it as machine embroidery designs. All of her designs are "manually punched" and never never "autodigitized." As Carolyn says, the shading in her designs "bring them to life and adds dimension."

Go on over and be prepared to spend some time browsing.

Hints and Tips

When I use a template, store bought or home made, I put double stick tape on the back to keep if from sliding. Actually it is better to take regular scotch tape and fold it back onto itself to make it double stick. This makes it a little thicker and easier to get off than regular double stick tape. The real double stick tape works better on paper templates. Some fibers might stick to it but that makes it less sticky so that less fibers stick to it. It can be used for quite a few cuts. I just roll the tape backwards around my finger, then flatten it on the back of the template. For paper I just add another piece of of the double stick on top of the old one when it loses it stickiness.

Humour

You have to be old enough to remember Abbott and Costello and their baseball skit and too old to really understand computers to fully appreciate this. For those of us who sometimes get flustered by our computers, please read on.

If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their famous sketch, "Who's on first?" might have turned out something like this:

Costello calls to buy a computer from Abbott

ABBOTT: Super Duper Computer Store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: Thanks. I'm setting up an office in my den and I'm thinking about buying a computer.

ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: No, the name's Lou.

ABBOTT: Your computer?

COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.

ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.

ABBOTT: What about Windows?

COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?

ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?

COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look at the windows?

ABBOTT: Wallpaper.

COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.

ABBOTT: Software for Windows?

COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?

ABBOTT: I just did.

COSTELLO: You just did what?

ABBOTT: Recommend something.

COSTELLO: You recommended something?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: For my office?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!

ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.

COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let's just say I'm sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I need?

ABBOTT: Word.

COSTELLO: What word?

ABBOTT: Word in Office.

COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.

ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.

COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?

ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue "W".

COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue "w" if you don't start with some straight answers. OK, forget that. Can I watch movies on the Internet?

ABBOTT: Yes, you want Real One.

COSTELLO: Maybe a real one, maybe a cartoon. What I watch is none of your business. Just tell me what I need!

ABBOTT: Real One.

COSTELLO: If it's a long movie, I also want to watch reels 2, 3 and 4. Can I watch them?

ABBOTT: Of course.

COSTELLO: Great! With what?

ABBOTT: Real One.

COSTELLO: OK, I'm at my computer and I want to watch a movie. What do I do?

ABBOTT: You click the blue "1."

COSTELLO: I click the blue one what?

ABBOTT: The blue "1."

COSTELLO: Is that different from the blue w?

ABBOTT: The blue "1" is Real One and the blue "W" is Word.

COSTELLO: What word?

ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.

COSTELLO: But there are three words in "office for windows"!

ABBOTT: No, just one. But it's the most popular Word in the world.

COSTELLO: It is?

ABBOTT: Yes, but to be fair, there aren't many other Words left. It pretty much wiped out all the other Words out there.

COSTELLO: And that word is real one?

ABBOTT: Real One has nothing to do with Word. Real One isn't even part of Office.

COSTELLO: STOP! Don't start that again. What about financial bookkeeping? You have anything I can track my money with?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?

ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.

COSTELLO: What's bundled with my computer?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?

ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.

COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?

ABBOTT: One copy.

COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?

ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.

COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?

ABBOTT: Why not? They own it!

A few days later. . .

ABBOTT: Super Duper Computer Store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off?

ABBOTT: Click on "START"

The late author and lecturer, Leo Buscaglia, once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child.

The winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there.

When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, "Nothing. I just helped him cry."
